Getting to Know North America's Mituo Village
Mituo Village in North America was established based on the concept of Mituo Village as described by venerable Master Jingkong, a renowned Pure Land monk. Its purpose is to provide a large residential monastic center for monks, nuns, and lay Buddhists who share the same ideals. Mituo Village is not only the largest Pure Land Dharma center in North America but also a comprehensive Buddhist practice center that integrates practice, study, and residence.
Mituo Village serves a wide range of individuals, including the general public who have limited knowledge of Buddhism and seek short-term volunteer or retreat opportunities, as well as those who wish to engage in long-term in-depth study and practice, regardless of whether they are monastics or lay practitioners. Its existence provides practitioners with a unique path to study Buddhism and practice without fully leaving behind secular life. This integrated environment—where practice, study, and life come together—offers valuable resources for Buddhists who wish to continue their cultivation in everyday life.
As a monastic center, Mituo Village serves both ordained and lay practitioners, suitable for those who have deep faith in cause and effect and are devoted to the practice of chanting the Buddha's name, as well as those who seek inner peace and spiritual growth in modern life. It provides not only a temporary space for busy modern individuals to retreat from the hustle and bustle and return to inner peace but also a platform for learning and sharing Buddhist teachings and experiences.
To meet the needs of practitioners at different stages of practice, Mituo Village is carefully planned with both inner and outer areas for practice and ordinary community life. The inner area emphasizes Pure Land practices, focusing on faith, vow, and practice, with a dedicated space for monastics and lay Buddhists to cultivate a serene environment for focused practice. The outer area aims to spread Buddhist teachings and promote Buddhism's development, conducting various Buddhist study activities under the guidance of localizing and modernizing the teachings. The ordinary community of Mituo Village provides a place for those with limited knowledge of Buddhism or who have not yet fully committed to intensive practice to gradually come into contact with Buddhist teachings, experience wisdom and compassion, and develop mindfulness and wisdom in a harmonious environment, moving toward enlightenment.
Mituo Village in North America not only provides a sacred place for Buddhist practitioners but also injects new vitality into the spread and development of Buddhism in the United States. Through this platform, the wisdom and compassion of Buddhism are more widely disseminated, offering modern individuals a spiritual home and guidance.
