Building the statue of Amitabha Buddha

《Building the Pure Land Together: Participating in the Construction of the Amitabha Buddha Statue in Mituo Village》

In the “Repaying Kindness Chanting Hall” of Mituo Village, a project of historical significance is about to unfold—a grand statue of Amitabha Buddha awaits the participation and devotion of every one of us. Standing six meters(20 feet) tall, including a 1.2-meter(4 feet) lotus base and a 4.8-meter(16 feet) Buddha statue, it symbolizes Amitabha Buddha's forty-eight great vows. The surface of the Buddha statue will be adorned with over 9,000 sheets of genuine gold leaf, highlighting its supreme sanctity and grace. Once completed, it will be the largest indoor Amitabha Buddha statue in the United States. This project is not just a construction endeavor but a spiritual practice and a collective aspiration.

**Inheriting Wisdom, Illuminating Hope**

As the largest Pure Land Buddhist community in North America, Mituo Village bears the significant responsibility of spreading the essence of Buddhism and promoting the Pure Land method. In a region where Buddhist historical and cultural roots are scarce, the inheritance and dissemination of Buddhist teachings are undoubtedly challenging tasks. However, as students of the Buddha, we feel a deep obligation to guide more people to approach, understand, and appreciate the profound teachings of Buddhism, to experience the boundless compassion of Amitabha Buddha, and to aspire to the Western Pure Land. Establishing a magnificent statue of Amitabha Buddha is not only a visual representation of Amitabha Buddha's majestic virtues but also a beacon leading sentient beings toward spiritual refuge. This statue will not only become the soul landmark of Mituo Village but also symbolize the circulation and illumination of Buddhist wisdom in the world. Together, we will let this light of the soul touch more people seeking truth and liberation. Every effort we make will serve as a powerful force to spread the light of Buddhist wisdom and compassion throughout the world.

**Unity in Purpose, Joint Effort in Contribution**

Participating in the construction of this grand Buddha statue, we are not merely calling for traditional acts of kindness and contributions but sincerely inviting everyone with a compassionate heart to take part in this endeavor with concrete actions. We hope that everyone will cultivate the Bodhi mind and learn from Amitabha Buddha (to unite our

minds with the Buddha's), making the forty-eight great vows. With respect, handwrite the name of Amitabha Buddha forty-eight times, and with each writing, please recite the sacred name of Amitabha once with all your sincerity (a total of forty-eight times). We will embed this devotion and aspiration into the statue, creating a Buddha statue that truly gathers the collective intention and mindfulness of the masses. At the consecration ceremony of the great Buddha, the names written by everyone from around the world will be sealed inside the statue, symbolizing our profound connection with Amitabha Buddha. Every participant will establish an ineffable bond with Mituo, allowing the great Buddha to accumulate deeper meaning and energy through our involvement.
In design, the grand Amitabha Buddha of North America's Mituo Village, inspired by the beloved golden image of Amitabha Buddha and guided by the teachings of the "Sutra on the Measurement and Creation of Statues," has undergone fifteen months of meticulous adjustments and optimizations through ten versions, finally presenting a version worthy of reverence.
As stated in the "Sutra on the Measurement and Creation of Statues," "Should a good person wish to create an image for the benefit of oneself and others and to cultivate a field of merit, it must be done according to the measurement laws." Though our wisdom and capabilities are limited, we strive with utmost sincerity and effort to faithfully replicate the Buddha's image as instructed by the scriptures, fulfilling the aspirations and expectations of many devotees.
