Bathing Buddha Festival: Inheritance of Buddhist Education
The celebration of the Bathing Buddha Festival is not only an annual event in Mituo Village but also a grand occasion for purifying our body, speech, and mind. This year, we seamlessly integrated the Bathing Buddha Festival with the Vesak Day and Mother's Day, holding a magnificent Buddhist education event from May 11th to 12th weekend, attracting the love and participation of the public.
Significance of Buddhist Festivity: Origin of the Bathing Buddha Festival
Buddha's birthday, the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, is also known as the "Bathing Buddha Festival". Did you know? According to records, Buddha Shakyamuni was born on the first full moon day of the year 623 BC, accompanied by the rain of nine dragons and the scattering of heavenly flowers, celebrating the arrival of this sage. Buddha, who taught the truth of the universe and human life through eighty-four thousand Dharma doors, is our teacher. Therefore, in later generations, people hold grand ceremonies on this day not only to celebrate the birth of Buddha but also to convey the educational ideas of Buddha and cherish Buddha's grace through a series of educational activities.

This year's Bathing Buddha Festival activities, from the arrangement of flower beds and the preparation of offerings to the holding of the Dharma assembly, all reflect the profound reverence and inheritance of Buddhist culture by every Buddhist disciple in the village.
Early on, the masters and Vietnamese elder sisters reserved various flowers such as roses, lilies, magnolias, and carnations. Not only were they full-bodied and colorful, but they also exuded a refreshing fragrance. When the flower beds were arranged and decorated, everyone entering the main hall was infected by the overflowing vitality and vigor, marveling at the solemn and sacred atmosphere of the hall.

Respecting Buddha, Bathing Buddha: A Ceremony to Purify the Soul
At half past eight in the morning, as the preparation of the bathing tub and fragrant soup was ready, the ceremony began punctually. The fragrant soup was a sandalwood bathing Buddha soup personally brewed by the monks the previous night, to simulate the sacred scene of heavenly flowers and nine dragons when Buddha was born.
The first step was to respectfully welcome the Prince's statue. Accompanied by the melodious chant of "Namo Sakyamuni Buddha," the presiding monk and nun led a procession of about twenty people to the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha outside the south side of the main hall to solemnly welcome the Prince's statue.
The monk respectfully placed the Prince's statue on the incense and flower tray and then, amidst the solemn atmosphere of drumbeats and earnest chanting of Buddhist scriptures, slowly entered the main hall and placed the statue on the incense tray in the center of the bathing tub.

Next was the climax of the ceremony—the formal bathing. Led by the monks, the congregation solemnly recited the "Bathing Buddha Verse": "Today, I bathe all Buddhas, purifying wisdom, adorned with merits and virtues, freeing sentient beings from worldly defilements, witnessing the pure Dharma body of all Buddhas." After respectfully bowing and paying homage, the monks individually offered incense to Buddha and bathed the Prince's statue.
Subsequently, the congregation neatly proceeded to the bathing altar in pairs, along with the melodious melody of the "Bathing Buddha Verse," asking for permission to kneel for three times to bathe Buddha, until each person had the opportunity to participate personally.
The process of respecting and bathing Buddha symbolizes washing away the afflictions of body, speech, and mind, obtaining the cool joy of Dharma.

After the Bathing Buddha ceremony, everyone returned to their respective positions in front of Buddha, led by the presiding monk and nun, completing the three refuge-taking and chanting Buddha's name for dedication, drawing a perfect conclusion to the hour-long Bathing Buddha ceremony. Subsequently, the activity entered the offering session, which lasted until eleven in the morning.
Education and Enlightenment: The Profound Significance of the Bathing Buddha Festival
For more than two thousand years, the reason why the bathing Buddha ceremony remains ever fresh is mainly due to the gratitude of later practitioners towards the cooling Buddha Dharma brought by Shakyamuni Buddha. The Buddha Dharma points out a path to liberation for lost sentient beings. By participating in the Bathing Buddha ceremony, the public seize the opportunity to cleanse their bodies and minds, purify afflictions and delusions, and constantly remind themselves: to continue the Buddha Dharma as their profession, allowing the compassionate light of Buddha to shine eternally on earth.
The "Merits of Bathing Buddha Sutra" specifically mentions the following merits of bathing Buddha: (1) Presently experiencing wealth and joy, extending lifespan without illness; (2) Attaining all desires and wishes; (3) Friends, relatives, and family all being peaceful and stable; (4) Departing from the eight difficulties, forever exiting the cycle of suffering; (5) Not reborn as a woman, swiftly attaining enlightenment.
