Recap of the 2024 Amitabha Christmas Buddha Retreat: Diligence in the Cold Winter, Progress on the Path of Practice
Amidst the chilly end-of-year days, Amitabha Village welcomed the joyous and spiritually uplifting Amitabha Christmas Buddha Retreat. From December 15 to December 21, this auspicious seven-day Dharma gathering united the devotion and aspirations of all participants, bringing purification to both body and mind and spiritual elevation to each individual. Many Dharma brothers and sisters arrived as early as December 14 to take on the preparatory tasks, embodying the spirit of "working together in unity, to adorn the Pure Land."
Favorable Conditions, Sharing in Dharma Joy
During the retreat, the "Repaying Gratitude Chanting Hall" was adorned with fragrant flowers and offerings, creating a serene and sacred atmosphere. The flowers, carefully arranged by the Dharma brothers and sisters, blossomed elegantly, emitting a sweet fragrance, like lotus flowers blooming in the Western Pure Land. The daily fresh fruit offerings symbolized the sincere intention of devotion, as well as the aspiration to accumulate merits and wisdom.

Volunteers performed various tasks with diligence—setting up the venue, preparing offerings, cleaning the chanting hall, and managing transportation. Every meticulous action demonstrated the power of collective effort. As Master Ouyi mentioned in A Guide to Amitabha's Pure Land: "The Pure Land comes into being based on the collective aspirations of all." Every intention, every drop of sweat, is a contributing condition for rebirth in the Pure Land, adding to the solemn and auspicious atmosphere of the retreat.

Diligence in Practice, Working Together to Support
During the Buddha Retreat, everyone rose at 4 a.m. each day to travel through the cold wind to the chanting hall and participate in the first incense offering. Despite the winter’s chill, the sound of Buddha's name and the reverberating chanting in the hall made participants forget the cold, filling them with warmth. The compassionate teachings of the Master encouraged everyone to focus on the words "Namo Amitabha Buddha" with a pure mind, aligning their thoughts with Amitabha's vow, transforming delusions into purity, and guiding their lives through faith and aspiration.

Throughout the retreat, each person not only diligently chanted Buddha’s name but also practiced the Bodhisattva way, contributing in their own way: the kitchen volunteers woke up early to prepare abundant meals for all, while the warmth of the kitchen fire was driven by their sincere dedication to supporting the Dharma; the dishwashing volunteers quietly cleaned hundreds of dishes, ensuring that every utensil was clean and orderly; the cleaning team worked every day to maintain the chanting hall, dining hall, and dormitories in a pure and solemn state; the transportation volunteers braved the cold wind to ensure the safety of the journey; and some volunteers even painted and repaired the venue, adding color to the Dharma space through their hard work.

All of this reflects what Master Yinguang taught in Letters to the Sangha: "A practitioner of Buddhism must always carry great compassion and empathy for all beings." Each volunteer's intention was the deepest respect for the Dharma and its practice.
Silent Snowy Night, Bodhisattva Action
On the sixth night of the retreat, heavy snow fell, covering Mituo Village in a blanket of white. However, the snow presented challenges for the next day's travel. The volunteers worked tirelessly overnight, spreading salt to prevent snow from turning to ice, ensuring that the path would be safe for the morning’s journey to the chanting hall. Due to their silent support, there was little snow accumulation on the roads the next day. Early in the morning, volunteers meticulously shoveled and swept the snow, ensuring that the elderly participants could walk safely without slipping.

This silent support embodies Master Yinguang's teaching: "In all circumstances, one should cultivate compassion and have a heart of joy and renunciation." Through their humble actions, the Bodhisattva’s compassion and protection were deeply embodied. The heavy snow that night was cold, but these Bodhisattva actions added warmth and solemnity to Amitabha Village.

The Buddha Retreat Completes, Grand Dedication and the Sacred Mount Offering
On the final day of the retreat, under the Master’s guidance, everyone circumambulated the hall in the direction of the Western Pure Land, an important part of the grand dedication. Through this act, the practitioners dedicated their chanting merits to the Pure Land and made vows to liberate all beings in the Dharma realm, to collectively attain Buddhahood. As the Amitabha Sutra states: "Make the aspiration for Bodhi and focus on chanting Amitabha Buddha’s name." Every recitation was filled with faith and aspiration, and each step seemed to take them closer to the Pure Land.

The subsequent Mount Mengshan Offering Ceremony was a powerful ritual where, through the blessings of the Buddha’s power, offerings were transformed into sweet nectar to be distributed to all beings in the ten directions. The practices of circumambulating the Pure Land and the Mount Mengshan offering complemented each other, guiding sentient beings with the power of aspiration and returning the merits to the Dharma realm. The retreat was thus concluded in a perfect manner, opening a new chapter for each participant's spiritual journey.

Warm Invitation: Participate in the January Three Periods Chanting Retreat
Although this Buddha Retreat has concluded, the cultivation of pure practices continues without pause. In January, Mituo Village will host the Three Periods Chanting Retreat in Manhattan, New York, and the Amitabha Buddha’s Grand Opening Ceremony along with the Three Periods Chanting Retreat. These are solemn and auspicious Dharma events, and we warmly invite practitioners from all directions to join us, experience the wisdom and compassion of the Pure Land Dharma, and continue accumulating merits and wisdom.

May the Buddha’s name always reside in our hearts, may the Dharma joy always be with us, and may the aspiration to be reborn in the Pure Land guide us toward the shore of enlightenment.
Namo Amitabha Buddha! 🙏
