A Heart-Lamp is First Lit

Snow Falls on the Wayplace · A Heart-Lamp is First Lit — A Record of the Mituo Village Opening Retreat and Kṣitigarbha Dharma Assembly

Early Morning, April 12 at Amitabha Village — The sky was just beginning to lighten.

No one expected that a light snowfall would arrive in Amitabha Village during springtime.
Silent snowflakes drifted down—falling before the statue of Guanyin, beside the Seven Treasures Pond, and quietly landing on each person’s heart.
In that moment, it was as if all sounds in heaven and earth paused—leaving only stillness and solemnity.

This was the first group retreat since the founding of Mituo Village.
The weather was very cold, yet everything felt just right.
For the colder it is, the more the warmth of people’s hearts shines through.
Practitioners arrived from all directions—some were already seated in the Buddha Hall before dawn.
The sound of the Buddha's name, one recitation after another, rang out, piercing the morning mist, penetrating the silence and fatigue within everyone.
Whether newcomers or long-time fellow practitioners, no one said much—everyone simply recited quietly.
That kind of focus and tranquility needed no words, yet it was deeply moving.

The brothers and sisters in the kitchen began preparations before daybreak.
Every steaming bowl and spoon of breakfast was filled with heartfelt warmth.

One elder sister, physically impaired, still insisted on coming.
She walked slowly yet steadily into the Dharma assembly—her sincerity brought tears to our eyes.

This retreat also welcomed several new friends.
Not only did they participate in the chanting, they actively helped with all aspects of the event.
Some assisted with setup, others with tidying the space, and some offered warm and practical suggestions.
Though we hadn’t met before, it felt as if we had long made an agreement to come to this place together, forming a bond of good karma.

On the second day, everyone recited the Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva's Fundamental Vows Sutra together,
vowing to emulate Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva’s boundless compassion and will.
In the afternoon, the Mengshan Food Offering ceremony was held,
with aspirations that all sentient beings throughout the Dharma realms may be free from suffering and swiftly reach liberation.

The Dharma instrument team cooperated with each other, step by step, sound by sound, putting heartfelt effort into each ritual.
Though still learning, they showed patience and gentleness. Within the chanting, there was an unspeakable sense of grace.

A small child also came along with their family.
They quietly sat outside the Buddha Hall, never causing a disturbance, even helping to organize the sutra shelves in silence.
Such spontaneous purity was like a small white flower blooming silently—bringing peace and joy to the heart.

Meanwhile, as everyone chanted, the temple was undergoing subtle changes.
A brother brought in a large number of Dharma books, carefully categorizing and organizing them late into the night without complaint.
Others sorted storage cabinets and front-desk keys, bringing more order to the resident operations.
Renovations in front of the main hall were also underway—workers and volunteers collaborated closely.
One brother helped with adjusting the water projection of the folding screen, bringing the scene of the Pure Land to life—dignified and warm.
The exterior activity center received a fresh coat of paint, preparing for future development.
Even our young volunteers helped adjust the color of the entrance wall,
and every brushstroke seemed to gently tell us: this is not just a temple—it is a sanctuary for the heart.

Another brother voluntarily took on all transportation responsibilities.
Driving back and forth, again and again, he ensured every practitioner arrived safely.
Not a word of complaint—only calm dedication and genuine intention.

These two days and one night were more than just a retreat—they felt like returning home.
Amidst the Buddha-name recitations, we let go of much, found peace within,
and rediscovered the aspiration that once led us onto the Pure Land path.

Perhaps this spring snow was the perfect symbol:
In the most unassuming moment of the world, a bit of clarity quietly falls;
In the time most needed by the soul, a heart-lamp is gently lit.
