Unceasing Dharma Sound, Unbroken Mindfulness

Unceasing Dharma Sound, Unbroken Mindfulness — A Complete Review of the Late-April Buddha Recitation Retreat at Amitabha Village

Spring breezes grow warmer, and gentle sunlight spreads over every corner of Amitabha Village.

As the vibrant energy of late April filled the air, Amitabha Village welcomed a rare and joyous event—a seven-day Buddha Recitation Retreat (Fo Qi) filled with Dharma bliss. Over the course of these seven days, the sounds of morning bells and evening drums echoed continuously, awakening the slumbering hearts of all present. Letting go of worldly affairs, practitioners gathered as one, single-mindedly chanting “Namo Amituofo.” In this unbroken stream of mindfulness, they experienced the supreme joy of being nourished by the Dharma and attaining inner purity and peace.

A successful retreat could not happen without the selfless contributions of those working both behind the scenes and in plain sight. Long before the retreat began, volunteers had already quietly begun preparations. From cleaning and arranging the Buddha Hall, to purchasing supplies and offerings, every detail was handled with care. Inside the Buddha Hall, flowers and fruit were replaced as needed to maintain a pure and solemn atmosphere in offering to the Buddhas. In the kitchen, volunteers cooked daily vegetarian meals with attentiveness, ensuring they were both nutritious and light—nourishing the body while reflecting the compassion and mindfulness found in true spiritual practice.

During the retreat, the Dharma instrument team reverently played ceremonial instruments in harmony with the chanting, enhancing the sacred energy of the space and helping everyone to focus their minds on the Buddha. Each participant joined with sincere and devoted hearts, practicing diligently day and night, regardless of the weather. The continuous recitation of the Buddha’s name formed a pure and dignified ocean of Dharma sound, captivating and inspiring all who heard it.

This retreat was led by Venerable Master Zhengcheng, who guided the assembly through days and nights of unwavering Buddha recitation. Her presence helped maintain a solemn and pure atmosphere, with the name of Amitabha Buddha resonating without end. After each evening’s chanting session, Venerable Master Fani was specially invited to deliver Dharma talks via livestream, guiding participants in the study of Great Master Sheng'an’s Treatise on Encouraging the Aspiration for Bodhi. With clear and accessible explanations each day, Master Fani inspired practitioners to give rise to great Bodhi vows and deepen their spiritual resolve. Throughout the entire retreat, the compassionate guidance of the masters, the ongoing sounds of bells and drums, and the ceaseless Dharma teachings supported everyone in establishing right understanding and right view. Buddha recitation and Dharma learning worked hand in hand, allowing minds and bodies to rest in a state of purity.

Though the seven days passed quickly, the Buddha’s name was deeply imprinted in our hearts. Looking back on this retreat, beyond the peace and joy brought by the practice itself, we are filled with gratitude for the many volunteers who quietly gave their time and effort. May this rare and precious group cultivation become a stream of cooling, nourishing nectar on the path of practice, helping us all to be reborn in the Pure Land and bloom together as lotus flowers. May the Dharma sound always remain, and may all virtuous aspirations return to the same source.
