One Grain of Sand, One World; One Thought, One Amitabha
Amitabha Buddha Mandala Sand Painting Exhibition
One grain of sand, a moment of mindfulness. One mandala, a heart of purity.
From October 17 to October 25, 2026, Mituo Village of North America will host the Amitabha Buddha Mandala Sand Painting Exhibition.

For this special event, Mituo Village has invited three Buddhist monks to create an Amitabha Buddha mandala sand painting on-site over the course of a week.
From the placement of the very first grain of colored sand to the gradual emergence of a magnificent mandala, this is not only a rare opportunity to witness a traditional mandala art form, but also a chance to experience a spiritual practice through mindful observation and quiet reflection.
What Is Mandala Sand Painting?
Mandala sand painting is the art of creating a mandala by carefully arranging fine grains of sand in different colors, one grain at a time.

Although each grain of colored sand may seem insignificant, the process requires extraordinary patience, concentration, and steadiness. Following the structure of the mandala, the monks begin at the center and gradually work outward. Intricate lines, patterns, and colors slowly come together, becoming more complete with each passing day.

The journey from “one grain of sand” to “an entire mandala” is much like our own spiritual cultivation.
A single recitation of the Buddha's name, one wholesome thought, or one moment of turning back toward the right path may seem small. Yet, through daily remembrance and continuous practice, the scattered mind can gradually settle, and our hearts can move ever closer to purity.

The completion and closing of the sand painting also remind us of an important Buddhist teaching:
All phenomena arise through causes and conditions, and all phenomena cease when their causes and conditions come to an end.
The mandala begins with individual grains of colored sand. Through the coming together of causes and conditions, it gradually takes on a magnificent form. When those conditions are fulfilled, it will eventually be dismantled, and the sand will return to its scattered state.

Between creation and dissolution, we are reminded of impermanence. We are also encouraged to cherish every present moment and hold firmly to the purity of our minds.
Through this exhibition, centered on the mandala of Amitabha Buddha, we hope that visitors will not only appreciate the beauty of this traditional art form, but also return their hearts to one simple yet profound practice: reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha.
Namo Amitabha Buddha!

Nine Days of Events
October 17 (Saturday) | Opening Ceremony
11:00 AM–11:45 AM
Mandala Exhibition Opening Ceremony
12:30 PM–6:30 PM
The three Buddhist monks will begin creating the mandala sand painting on-site.
This marks the beginning of the mandala's transformation from nothing into something magnificent. Visitors are welcome to witness the very first grains of colored sand being placed and to observe how the sacred mandala gradually takes shape, step by step.
October 18–24 | Ongoing Mandala Creation and Exhibition
Daily, 9:00 AM–6:30 PM
The three monks will continue working on the mandala sand painting.
As the days pass, the mandala will reveal a different appearance at each stage of its creation. Visitors are warmly invited to return to Mituo Village at different times to quietly observe the process and experience the power of concentration, patience, and inner peace.
This is more than simply “coming to see a painting.”
It is also an opportunity to give yourself a little time—to sit quietly before the mandala, recite the Buddha's name a few times, and allow your busy mind to slow down.
October 24 (Saturday) | Special Dharma Lecture
2:00 PM–3:30 PM
Special Lecture: Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and the Buddhist Mandala
As the mandala nears completion, we have arranged a special Dharma lecture to help visitors gain a deeper understanding of Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and the Buddhist teachings embodied in the mandala.
October 25 (Sunday) | Mandala Closing Ceremony
1:00 PM–2:00 PM
After many days of careful and dedicated work, the magnificent and intricate mandala will finally be complete.
The closing ceremony is also an essential part of the entire mandala event.
From nothing to something, countless grains of sand come together to form a magnificent mandala. And when it reaches completion, we are invited to reflect on causes and conditions, impermanence, and the practice of letting go.
The Buddhist teaching of formation, existence, deterioration, and dissolution is not a message of pessimism. Rather, it reminds us that what we should truly cherish is every present moment in which we can cultivate our practice, awaken our awareness, and recite the Buddha's name.
Everyone Is Welcome to Experience the Mandala and Share in the Dharma Joy
During these nine days, you may choose to visit for an afternoon or return several times to watch the mandala gradually take shape.
Families and friends are warmly welcome to join.
Whether or not you have encountered Buddhism before, and whether or not you are familiar with mandalas, you are welcome to come, observe quietly, and experience the moment.
Witness how individual grains of colored sand become a mandala.
And perhaps, in that quiet moment, discover whether your own heart can set aside the distractions of the outside world.
Mituo Village hopes to be more than just a place where events are held.
When you are tired, you are welcome to return and rest for a while.
When your mind feels unsettled, you are welcome to return and recite the Buddha's name.
Whenever you have time, you are also welcome to join the community in group practice and help support the Dharma.
One Grain of Sand, One World; One Thought, One Amitabha.
We sincerely invite Dharma friends, Buddhist practitioners, and people of goodwill from all directions to visit Mituo Village and share in the joy of the Dharma.
